On the road...

The Killer Junk crew is hitting the road next week. Bart is exhibiting his masking tape work for the 4th year at the 10th annual Fearrington Folk Art Show, one of the largest southern folk art shows on the east coast.

Tron will be out tracking down a truckload of new inventory for the studio. We are gearing up for a big spring and will be posting the new inventory here when we return on the 20th.

In the meantime, Bill Sinyard of Ikonik Modern will be opening the studio on Sunday the 12th and Saturday the 18th, or he'll be happy to meet you at your convenience. Bill has a great new selection of accent furniture - coffee tables, end tables, a beautiful slat bench, new chairs and lots of decorative objects.

So we've been doing as much research as possible to try and nail down the exact year of production for this Jens Risom chair that we picked up last weekend from Richmond dealer and collector, Maurice Beane (see his link over on the right). The label on the underside had us thinking it was an early one but we were unable to get any definitive information from all of the resources that we consulted with. We knew the chair was part of Risom's 650 series for Knoll - the first chairs produced by Knoll, designed in 1941 by Jens Risom and produced by Knoll until 1960.

So a couple of days ago I contacted the Knoll Museum via email with photos and received a very nice response from Knoll's Client Services Manager, Linda Kasper. She was able to provide the chair's model number (654U) by referencing old catalogues but was unfamiliar with this particular label.

We began to search "Knoll 654U" on the net and ran across a German auction site. Sure enough, there was the first image of this exact upholstered Risom chair that we could find. We had run across many examples of the webbed chair and an armchair version with the same style seat frame and upholstery, but not this one.

Today we received another email from Knoll and they stated that after Hans Knoll's marriage to Florence in 1946, the Knolls began using the name "Knoll Associates" which narrowed the date of manufacture of our chair to somewhere between 1941 and 1946. It doesn't get any earlier than that.

So now I am happy and yes...

Steel and Granite Studio Made Table

We picked this piece up several years ago from an art /sculpture student. It is a welded steel frame table on heavy 3" casters with a triangular granite top. The top is made from a broken granite slab. One section of the top is polished granite and the other section is in it's raw state. The table will accommodate 4 chairs for dining. It also works nicely as a studio work table. Table top measurements are 48" x 62" x 78." Stands 29 1/2" h.
